After drying, will Model Magic shrink? Will it hold its shape after being handled? Also can it be exposed to oils before and or after being painted?

Asked by: Ellenc3
Denny has the details! Crayola Model Magic is an air-drying, water-based modeling compound. While it will hold its shape after being handled, it will also dry with exposure to air. It is formulated so that any shrinkage would be minimal, so using an armature would work with this product. We do not recommend the use of oils with Model Magic before or after painting your sculpture. Using oils while Model Magic is wet will not allow the product to dry and we do not recommend exposing your finished piece to liquids, such as water and oil. After painting, you are welcome to use an acrylic varnish. My pack recommends experimenting with the varnish's compatibility on a test piece before applying it to your completed sculpture. If you have any further questions about Crayola Model Magic, please contact my pals at 1-800-CRAYOLA. Tell them Denny sent you!

How hard does model magic get? I have let them for 24hrs and they are still feeling a bit soft and spongy. How will I know they are fully dry?

Asked by: Brooke4567
That is a great question and Denny has the answer! Crayola Model Magic generally air-dries to the touch within 24 hours. However, it can take up to 72 hours for your sculpture to completely dry. When dry, Model Magic is not pliable, but does have some give to it like a Styrofoam cup. We suggest waiting at least 24 hours before adding color to your sculpture with Crayola paints and markers. If you need further help, my pack is a phone call away at 1-800-CRAYOLA. Be sure to tell them Denny sent you!

is model magic water soluble? can I use it in my aquarium to hold things from falling over?

Asked by: clarimore
I personally am one to color outside the lines and like the way you think! Unfortunately, Model Magic is not designed to hold up in an aquarium. The water will cause the product to disintegrate and while nontoxic, shouldn't be used this way. Check your local pet store for products that can be used to keep your fish habitat in order. Hope this helps!

Is the model magic clay gluten free?

Asked by: LBoe
What a colorful question! Crayola Model Magic does not contain wheat or other grains known to be a source of gluten. Keep in mind that multiple Crayola products are produced in the same manufacturing facilities and on the same machinery. While there is a slight chance of cross-contamination, the machinery used to manufacture Crayola products is cleaned between production runs in a manner that meets or exceeds all regulations. Hope you'll enjoy sculpting your bluetiful masterpieces!

Can I put model magic in the oven to dry faster? If so, at what temperature and for how long?

Asked by: AD12
I'm glad you asked! Crayola Model Magic should not be put in an oven or kiln to dry. Typically, finished pieces will dry in about 24 hours based on their thickness. If our Colorful Care Team can be of any further assistance, please contact them at 1-800-CRAYOLA, and tell them Denny sent you!

Hello! Please tell me the approximate composition of Crayola Model Magic, I can't find it on your web-site. Thank you!

Asked by: Aleksandra
I'm happy to help, Aleksandra! Crayola Model Magic modeling compound is an exciting, non-toxic modeling material that is easily manipulated and joined to make any form or shape. Remarkably lightweight, clean and resilient, it is non-crumbling and it doesn't cling to skin or room surfaces. It can be attached to plastic, wood, cardboard and other materials. Model Magic is available in various colors. It is easily paintable after it has dried for 24 hours. Crayola® compound dries to a resilient consistency within 24-36 hours, without kiln firing. Happy sculpting!
